I'm A *Coach

Updated: Aug 3, 2024

The term “Coach” is widely used, but few truly understand its meaning and the responsibilities it entails.

I hired a Personal Trainer (PT) in the past, and at that time, running on a treadmill in flip-flops seemed acceptable and my PT didn’t seem to care. 🤣 It took me a while to realize what I should expect for the amount I paid. 👌🏽

Anyone can call themselves a “Coach,” but what makes an effective Coach? 🤔

As a fitness Coach myself, I still look for certain standards to find the right fit for my clients. Coaching doesn’t have to be limited to fitness; it can encompass any form of mentorship.

A good Coach is someone who understands and delves deeper into your true needs. If your Coach doesn’t understand you, it’s destined to fail. That’s why I admire Coaches who have experienced the same weight-loss journey, as they can genuinely relate to the struggles they talk about.

Does a Coach need to be extremely fit to be good at what they do? This is subjective. I’ve encountered coaches with incredible physiques who excel only at counting reps during workouts.

On the other hand, a good fitness Coach practices what they preach. I’m not saying you need to eat broccoli every day, but you can’t ask your clients to eat healthy while you’re indulging in pork ribs and beer, and proudly sharing it on social media with hashtags like #NOTOCHEATMEALS #YESTOSUSTAINABLEEATING just because it suits the Coach’s chosen bad lifestyle.

The next time someone says, “I’m a Coach,” ask them if they truly embody the meaning of being one.
